GENI Planning Group

GENI is an experimental facility being planned by the NSF, in collaboration with the research community. It's goal is to enable the research community to invent and demonstrate a global communications network and related services that will be qualitatively better than today's Internet. The research community is encouraged to participate in its design.

Announcements

May 21, 2007: NSF has funded BBN Technologies to establish GENI project office (GPO). See the BBN press release for more information.
April 25, 2007: A draft of the Project Execution Plan (Conceptual Design) is now available. It includes a set of documents: a Research Plan (why we are building GENI), a Facility Design (what GENI is), a Requirements Document (link between research and facility), and the Construction Plan (how GENI is to be built). This set updates January 2006 Project Execution Plan.
November 3, 2006: Additional information about the planning process are now available: (1) new and updated Design Documents (including multiple views), (2) a planning schedule for the next several months, and (3) additional presentations that summarize on-going efforts to flesh out the facility definition.
September 18, 2006: NSF has funded the Computing Research Association (CRA) to create the Computing Community Consortium (CCC). See the CRA press release for more information.
September 15, 2006: Set of draft GENI Design Documents (GDDs) go online.
July 13-14, 2006: CRA organizes San Francisco NSF Town Hall Meeting on GENI.
June 25, 2006: CRA organizes Snowbird NSF Town Hall Meeting on GENI.
June 22, 2006: GENI Design Document (GDD) series now available.
June 15, 2006: Planning Group posts update of GENI Design Principles document. Now available as GDD-06-08.
May 5-6, 2006: CRA organizes Chicago NSF Town Hall Meeting on GENI.
April 29, 2006: Planning Group posts draft GENI Design Principles for comment.
March 10, 2006: CRA organizes Washington D.C. NSF Town Hall Meeting on GENI.
February 7, 2006: GENI changes its official name from "Global Environment for Network Investigations" to "Global Environment for Network Innovations."
January 20, 2006: A snapshot of GENI's design is now available. This snaphot was prepared by the GENI planning group, and will be refined in coming months in response to community feedback.
December 19, 2005: MIT Technology Review features GENI in their December/January Issue. A three-part feature and a supplemental interview are available online. PRI's The World program also aired a segment on the story, archived here in WMA and OGG formats.
December 5, 2005: NSF informational meeting on the NeTS Program's Future Internet Design (FIND) initiative.
August 25, 2005: NSF announces the GENI Initiative at SIGCOMM.
